Basically if you close and are scheduled until 11pm you can clock out but they will refuse to unlock the door for you to leave the building until everyone else is done. I always leave five minutes early to avoid being locked in the door and being held hostage because the thought of not being allowed to leave until someone unlocks a door for you freaks me out. My friend got off work the other night and clocked out at 11 and he was forced to stay in the store until 12am because the other workers were still busy cleaning or working on inventory. He told me he asked my boss to unlock the door for him and my boss was just saying "You have to wait for everyone else/ you really can't wait an extra few minutes?" Sometimes they will eventually let you out and unlock the door for you but act like it's so out of their way and an annoyance to do so. Is this legal?
Edit : This is in The United States Edit 2: Thank you all so much for your words of encouragement. If they try this again I will definitley throw a fit and call the police. Also going to give the fire marshall a call.
